Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra for Kids: Rituals, Stories & Family Traditions

Every year, millions of families celebrate Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of India's most joyful and vibrant festivals. Colorful chariots, devotional songs, flowers, and smiling devotees come together to celebrate the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

For children, Rath Yatra is a beautiful way to discover India's rich culture through stories, traditions, and family celebrations.

At Panda's Box, we believe children connect best with culture through joyful experiences. Let's explore the beautiful rituals of Rath Yatra and the timeless values they teach.

What is Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra?

Rath Yatra, or the Festival of Chariots, celebrates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, along with His brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra, from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in Puri, Odisha.

The festival symbolizes Lord Jagannath stepping out to bless everyone, reminding us that love, kindness, and devotion are for all.

Beautiful Rath Yatra Rituals

1. Snana Purnima – The Sacred Bath

The celebrations begin with Snana Purnima, when the three deities are ceremonially bathed with 108 pots of sacred water.

A lesson for kids: Cleanliness, care, and preparing ourselves for new beginnings.

2. Anasara – Time to Rest

After the grand bath, the deities are believed to rest for about fifteen days before appearing again for Rath Yatra.

A lesson for kids: Rest is just as important as activity. Even the strongest need time to recover.

3. Chhera Pahanra – The King Serves

Before the procession begins, the King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom.

A lesson for kids: True greatness comes from humility and serving others.

4. The Grand Rath Yatra

This is the highlight of the festival. Thousands of devotees pull the beautifully decorated wooden chariots through the streets while singing bhajans, chanting "Jai Jagannath," and showering flowers.

A lesson for kids: Teamwork, unity, and devotion can bring people together in wonderful ways.

5. Gundicha Temple Visit

The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for a few days before returning home.

A lesson for kids: Spending time with family and loved ones strengthens relationships and creates beautiful memories.

6. Bahuda Yatra & Niladri Bije

The return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra, ends with Niladri Bije, when Lord Jagannath returns to the temple. According to tradition, He offers Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi, who happily welcomes Him home.

A lesson for kids: Love, forgiveness, and sharing always bring families closer.
